Yang Fire Monkey Year by White Crane Healing Arts

by Miki on February 6, 2016

The Chinese new year which begins on the second new moon after the winter solstice will be on Monday, February 8th at 9: am. The rising moon will usher in the year of the Yang Fire Monkey and If I had to describe the year in one word it would be dynamic. I’ll explain why, but first, a brief description of how the Chinese astrological system works for those not acquainted with it.

Every year is either Yin or Yang. This cycle repeats itself continuously each hour, day, week, month and year. Last year was yin, therefore, this year is yang and next year will be yin, etc. Another cycle, known as the 5 elements, which is a system of corresponding energies, is used in Chinese astrology in two different cycles, known as the Earthly Branches and the Heavenly Stems. A branch and stem is ascribed to each year and if you understand their symbolic meaning, you can gain insight about yearly expectations and how to interpret what that year’s potential influence will be.
Earthly branches rotate in a 12 year cycle. One of the twelve animals (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, boar) is used to describe each year in the cycle and this animal represents a certain quality of energy. Each animal is either Yin or Yang and has a fixed element. For example, every monkey is yang and has a fixed element of metal. So all monkeys, regardless of what year they’re born in will have some attributes of metal (negative & positive) such as being composed or scattered, devoted, candid, trustworthy, combative, withdrawn, etc.
Each year is also influenced by the Heavenly stems cycle. This is a cycle of the five elements in their yin and yang stages which creates a cycle of ten years. This cycle rotates like this: yang earth – yin earth, yang metal – yin metal, yang water- yin water, yang wood – yin wood, yang fire – yin fire and then it starts again.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine that is used to alleviate pain and/or to treat various physical, mental, and emotional conditions by using small needles to stimulate points on the human body. Originating in ancient China, acupuncture is now widely practiced in the West.

Acupuncture is over 5000 years old and is a time tested healing modality originating from the far East.  Each individual will experience acupuncture on a personal level and what one feels depends on their own state of being and level of sensitivity.  It’s common to feel a sensation of warmth, tingling or traveling Qi (energy) when the needles are inserted; and many experience a profound sense of relaxation and well being or possibly increased energy.  Acupuncture treats the whole being which includes body, mind, emotions and spirit.

Acupuncture points are located in the small depressions or hollows in the skin called gates.  Thru these gates, one can access the internal streams and rivers of energy that transport Qi and blood.  Qi and blood give sustenance to the interaction and cohesion of mind, body and spirit.  Fundamentally, illness manifests when Qi, Blood and Fluids are either blocked, depleted or imbalanced, which diminishes its healthy coherence to the point of dysfunction or eventually illness. Acupuncture can reorganize this dynamic by opening, closing or harmonizing the flows within the rivers and streams (channels).

Some examples would be, helping individuals to manifest their potential in the real world; helping someone that is experiencing an emotional situation (good or bad), to feel or express it  and one more example would be helping someone that is constantly discharging energy to store energy in order to have a sense of cohesion.  Our inner world of feelings and emotions are constantly challenged in an increasingly complicated world which prevents our neurological system from processing the incoming data that seems to be coming at us at an increasingly faster pace.

All hygienic precautions are observed and only sterilized disposable needles are used.

Quiet Sitting Meditation – White Crane Healing Arts

White Crane Healing Arts - Holistic Family Healthcare - Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Herbal Therapy, Qigong Classes, Self Cultivation Practices & NutritionFriends & Students,

We had a great turnout for the last quiet sitting class. For those of you interested in going deeper into the nei gong practices, quiet sitting meditation is a necessary component. There are three prerequisites that are essential to developing skills. They are becoming present, Taoist Longevity breathing, and the dissolving process. In my experience I’ve noticed that sitting quietly for a length of time is the most difficult skill to develop for most students.

As I’ve mentioned repeatedly, our culture emphasizes activity, which activates the thinking process. Extreme activity creates rumination or over thinking, which, over time creates an imbalance in the digestive organs. Our ability to nourish ourselves then becomes greatly compromised. These practices are about observing the relationship between our inner world with the outer world; and discovering how to reconcile the imbalances we see to create greater harmony.

Most of us, since birth, have been conditioned to think and view things in a linear fashion; but when we delve into our inner worlds, which requires a shift to how our minds function, we discover a subtle infinite universe. If we look at a metaphor of waves above the ocean, we see the waves as the obvious observable experiences of life, but these waves are generated by currents of energy below the surface, and these currents are influenced by even more subtle and deeper currents.

This is why in our practices we try to feel below and behind the obvious. The descending flow of energy that permeates our world (earth) is the primary energy we want to recognize and stabilize within, especially in the beginning. Sinking energy deeply into the body helps to heal by cleansing and purifying what our body is unable to process; and most importantly, it repairs the nervous system.

Dropping the energy of the brain into the lower dan tien (belly area) initializes a sense of the inner currents that are pushing various body functions into stress mode. Within this process of sinking the various energies, we will try to make clear distinctions inside for the purpose of releasing, integrating and recognizing what truly nourishes us.

Good Journey,
Frank

Summer Qigong Classes & Explorations in TAO

SAMSUNGThis summer we will be doing the most comprehensive study to date. Qigong Classes will combine Taoist longevity breathing with TAO Yoga. Breath awareness is fundamental to enhancing the ability to feel inside and increase efficiency and functionality of the body’s internal systems. In this class we will bring to awareness all the potential physical mechanics of breath until they are consistently engaged and integrated; as well as progressively lengthened.

Ancient Taoists observed that this quality of breath could be sustained while doing practices, chores or any activity. As this skill is practiced and developed throughout the day, it can lead to profound life altering shifts within one’s being. Wisdom from ancient Taoist culture tells us that being deeply quiet in the mist of disorder or chaos reveals the nature of healing for mind and body.

Five yoga postures will be introduced as the gateway to whole body breathing. Tao Yoga is a form of qigong. All qigong is “energy work”, for developing the power to heal.

How does TAO Yoga differ from Hatha Yoga?

Hatha yoga uses postures or asanas and breath control (pranayama), to energize subtle channels (nadis). Tao Yoga uses gentle movement and breath to move and balance chi. In Hatha Yoga you stretch to relax; whereas in TAO Yoga you relax to loosen, expand and relax the body. You find a comfortable point, which is around 70% of your physical extension or range of motion, then release and relax the body. When the body becomes deeply relaxed, the mind becomes quieter and spirit is engaged.

TAO Yoga can improve Hatha or any yoga practice because the internal training tunes the body through the different postures which transform the physical and emotional layers. The emphasis, which is on moderation and softening, allows the nerves to release the muscles so that the body gains the flexibility needed to get into the postures. The goal is to progressively incorporate all the principles of internal qigong (nei gong) with each posture.

I’ve found within my 45 years of exploring mind/body practices that the combination of Taoist longevity breathing and TAO Yoga is the least complicated way of achieving the “rhythm of stillness”. Developing the skill to feel discomfort, energy flows, or imbalances, increases your ability to affect your vibration or frequency. This knowledge is not gained through the intellect, but through a kinetic sense of who you are. Understand, this is an entirely different paradigm that overrides linear thinking and conditioning.

Explorations in TAO – 4 classes

Discussion, experience and exploration, from a Taoist perspective in this class, will encompass the vast expanse of scientific and spiritual knowledge that comes from the wisdom and sacred traditions of the TAO. Inherent in Taoist tradition and arts is the reality that everything exists on multiple levels of energy; everything is energetically connected and energy is in constant transformation.

Topics will include: understanding cyclic energy transformations, I Ching consulting and mapping, nutrition, diet & food preparation, astrology, meditation, spiritual practices and other related material. Readings from Taoist literature and other spiritual classics will be a part of each class, as well as experiential lessons to enhance right brain intuition to create a balance of linear thinking and analog understanding.

Our purpose will be to inspire, increase individual awareness, develop creativity, and contribute positively to the collective whole of the group and planet. Everyone is encouraged to contribute, ask questions and share their own experience and wisdom with the group.

Summer Schedule

Classes this summer will be taught in four modules. Each module will consist of three weeks of movement and one week of Explorations in TAO, for a total of 12 movement classes and 4 Exploration classes. Each class will include review as well as new material. You’re welcome to attend any number of classes in any combination you choose; however, the more consistent your attendance and practice, the easier it will be to integrate your knowledge at a deeper level.
