The Role of Family Therapy In Addiction Recovery

The Role Of Family Therapy In Addiction Treatment - with JC's Recovery Center in Hollywood, FL

By: Allison Konovalova, M.S. MFT

As a Marriage and Family Therapist, it is my experience that family of origin issues play a central role in the cycle of addiction. Therefore, if family issues are addressed both in the context of individual and family therapy, everyone involved can be helped to find their new role in the family and move to a closer place. Family therapy is often a crucial role in recovery because it allows the family to work through their issues together. The family environment is often damaged by years of addiction and may become hostile or negative, which can push the addict away. A supportive family is a huge benefit, but often family members need guidance on how to set healthy boundaries with their family member suffering from addiction.

The Role Of Family Therapy In Addiction Treatment

Often family therapy can be overlooked as the person seeking treatment focuses on individual therapy, group therapy, and building a sober support network. But issues within the family can help keep the perpetual cycle of negativity affecting everyone in the family, especially the person trying to recover. Drugs and alcohol have a huge impact on family and relationships with co-workers, friends, siblings, etc. and it very useful for important relationships to be a part of the recovery process. Family members often struggle with trust, betrayal and plenty of negative feelings that need to be dealt with before anyone can move on and begin the process of forgiving the addict and rebuilding a relationship. Family therapy is the best way to start healing the interpersonal hurts caused during addiction because it brings everyone together and forces people to face the feelings and issues they might otherwise avoid. Particularly, family members need a safe environment with an impartial figure that can help navigate the difficult issues that arise out of the years of poor communication, decision making and distanced relationships.

Some of the many benefits of family therapy include learning how to set boundaries with other family members, as well as the person recovering from addiction, identifying underlying family dysfunction and bringing it to the light for everyone to understand, helping families understand how the family functions as a system and the importance of envisioning it as one, and identifying which interpersonal relationships need to be altered to support the recovering addict. For example, if the addict has always had a distant/conflictual relationship with his father the clinician would address ways to bring about more understanding, compassion, love and closeness to this specific relationship.

The family therapy process works like this:

  1. First the family is brought in together to discuss the main issues they are facing in the present, and to openly discuss their feelings about what they perceive as the problem. The clinician will make sure that each family member has the chance to voice their feelings and concerns.
  2. Then the clinician will work together with the family to identity what kind of goals they can make individually and as a family to change the environment, patterns of negative interaction, and address resentments.
  3. In additional future sessions the clinician will process what kind of change is happening in the family, and what can be done to continue to promote positive change for family members and the addict.

It can be difficult to make changes in ways of relating within families, as often these patterns have often been set many years ago. But change is always possible, and family therapy can greatly increase the likelihood of families being able to work together to achieve a happier, healthier family structure overall. Family therapy is one of the most important modalities of therapy in the addictions recovery process, which is why we embrace it wholeheartedly at our care facility.

The Qi of Turkey and Apple Pie

White Crane Healing Art of Broward providing Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Herbal Therapy, Qigong Classes, Self Cultivation Practices & Nutritional Guidanceby Miki – Whitecrane Healing Arts

Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching and like many of you, I’ll be spending the holiday with family. My daughter and I will share memories and catch up with recent events, while cooking our mostly traditional Thanksgiving dinner. In Taoist and Chinese understanding, food like everything in the universe has “Qi” or life force. When we eat, food shares its life force with us. This life force influences us in different ways, for example, the Qi of whole wheat is as follows: wheat has a cooling thermal nature, it’s sweet, builds yin (fluids) and benefits the heart and calms the spirit. This holistic system includes the understanding that food, with its nutritional components and mystical qualities is a powerful healing force.

I thought it would be fun to analyse, Chinese style, the Qi and energetic influence of some of the ingredients in a typical Thanksgiving dinner.

  • Turkey – warming (though less so than chicken), building, tonifys qi and builds blood
  • Cranberries – slightly warming, sour flavor, astringent, benefits the liver & kidneys, cleanses the blood of toxins, controls urinary functions, astringes essence
  • Sweet Potatoes or Yams – cooling thermal nature, sweet flavor, strengthens the spleen and stomach, clears heat, tonifys qi.
  • White Potatoes – neutral, sweet, tonifys spleen-pancreas qi, harmonizes the stomach, lubricates the intestines, mildly diuretic, strengthens kidney yin
  • Green Beans – slightly sweet & bland, warming, descends chi, benefits the lungs, kidneys & Qi
  • Leafy Greens (kale) – slightly bitter, warming, strengthens stomach, descends Qi
  • Onions, garlic, green Onions & other pungent vegetables (garlic, green onions, leeks etc.) – warming, immunity building, dries dampness, benefits the lungs
  • Winter squashes, pumpkin, carrots – warming thermal nature, sweet flavor, influences the spleen-pancreas, stomach, reduces inflammation
  • Apples – cooling, sweet & sour, produces fluids in the body, moistens dryness and reduces heat, especially in the lungs – cooling thermal nature, sweet flavor, benefits the stomach and immune system

Just as food shares its life force with us, we share our life force (Qi) with food. This may sound silly to some, but if you consider that everything in the universe is Qi and that Qi (energy) borders are not as well defined as physical boundaries, then it follows that, if the person(s) preparing the food is not feeling well, or has some level of negative emotion, that energy will be absorbed by the food. It makes sense then, that a meal prepared lovingly is far more nourishing for both body and spirit.

Foods can also be influenced by cooking, freezing or adding other ingredients. For example, a cooling food, like apples, will become neutral when baked and if you also add warming spices like cinnamon, nutmeg or cloves etc, like in apple pie, it can change the apple’s influence to warming. We should also be mindful of how food is grown or raised. Was your turkey naturally raised, naturally fed and allowed to run free (this makes for a happy turkey)? Are your vegetables locally grown, fresh, frozen, organic? This new way of understanding food is truly ancient, natural and really quite simple when you get the hang of it. All the senses are engaged when you evolve your relationship to food and with experience and practice you will also develop an intuitive skill for “knowing” what foods resonate best with your body type and climate. Talk about soul food!

Our wish for you is that Thanksgiving Day and everyday is full of positive Qi, nourishing sustenance and peaceful moments to appreciate life.

In Gratitude,
Frank & Miki

Acupuncture points from White Crane Healing Arts in Ft Lauderdale, Florida
Acupuncture points

Acupuncture Treatments are over 5000 years old and is a time tested healing modality originating from the far East.  Each individual will experience acupuncture on a personal level and what one feels depends on their own state of being and level of sensitivity.

Acupuncture points are located in the small depressions or hollows in the skin called gates.  Thru these gates, one can access the internal streams and rivers of energy that transport Qi and blood.

Some examples us acupuncture treatments would be, helping individuals to manifest their potential in the real world; helping someone that is experiencing an emotional situation (good or bad), to feel or express it  and one more example would be helping someone that is constantly discharging energy to store energy in order to have a sense of cohesion.

All hygienic precautions are observed and only sterilized disposable needles are used in our acupuncture treatments.

Spring Equinox & Quiet Sitting Class at White Crane

White Crane Healing Arts - Holistic Family Healthcare - Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Herbal Therapy, Qigong Classes, Self Cultivation Practices & NutritionHello Friends and Students,

The next Taoist Quiet Sitting Class is on Tuesday, March 24th from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm. We will continue to explore the energies of sinking (descending) and how to move these energies with great discernment into the dissolving process. Most of us find that when we start to observe, our minds are jumbled up into a mixture of thoughts, emotions and sensations; but we lack the skill to calm and integrate these experiences. Without clear discernment and the ability to feel the quality of energy that is occupying your mind at any given moment, it becomes increasingly difficult to quiet your being and deepen the experience of true inner space.

We will also begin a conversation about fear. The energy of fear creates one of the most fundamental blockages that can be encountered. Discussion will focus on the nature of fear and how it limits our growth at every level.

Beginners Welcome!

Location: White Crane Healing Arts Center, 7071 W. Commercial Blvd. 2C, Tamarac, FL 33319

Date & Time: Tuesday, March 24th  7:00 – 8:30 PM

Cost: $10.00

phone: 954-721-7252
email: whitecrane.iborra@gmail.com

Website:  http://www.whitecranehealingarts.com

PS – Friday, March 20th is the spring equinox. The new moon will prevail and in that will be the energy of new beginnings. Day and Night will be equal; and therefore yin and yang will also be equal. The sun will rise directly in the east and set directly in the west. In Taoist cosmology, the equinox is considered a high energy day.

If desired, you can acknowledge this energy with incense, candles and/or invocations. The idea is to raise your consciousness and purify your energy; especially on the subtle spiritual plane. Other suggestions include meditation, prayer, a reading of something that inspires you deeply, spending time in nature watching a sunrise or sunset, visiting a beach, forest or mountain. Whatever you choose, it should be done with clear intent – you get the idea!

Good Journey,

Frank

Quiet Sitting Meditation – White Crane Healing Arts

White Crane Healing Arts - Holistic Family Healthcare - Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Herbal Therapy, Qigong Classes, Self Cultivation Practices & NutritionFriends & Students,

We had a great turnout for the last quiet sitting class. For those of you interested in going deeper into the nei gong practices, quiet sitting meditation is a necessary component. There are three prerequisites that are essential to developing skills. They are becoming present, Taoist Longevity breathing, and the dissolving process. In my experience I’ve noticed that sitting quietly for a length of time is the most difficult skill to develop for most students.

As I’ve mentioned repeatedly, our culture emphasizes activity, which activates the thinking process. Extreme activity creates rumination or over thinking, which, over time creates an imbalance in the digestive organs. Our ability to nourish ourselves then becomes greatly compromised. These practices are about observing the relationship between our inner world with the outer world; and discovering how to reconcile the imbalances we see to create greater harmony.

Most of us, since birth, have been conditioned to think and view things in a linear fashion; but when we delve into our inner worlds, which requires a shift to how our minds function, we discover a subtle infinite universe. If we look at a metaphor of waves above the ocean, we see the waves as the obvious observable experiences of life, but these waves are generated by currents of energy below the surface, and these currents are influenced by even more subtle and deeper currents.

This is why in our practices we try to feel below and behind the obvious. The descending flow of energy that permeates our world (earth) is the primary energy we want to recognize and stabilize within, especially in the beginning. Sinking energy deeply into the body helps to heal by cleansing and purifying what our body is unable to process; and most importantly, it repairs the nervous system.

Dropping the energy of the brain into the lower dan tien (belly area) initializes a sense of the inner currents that are pushing various body functions into stress mode. Within this process of sinking the various energies, we will try to make clear distinctions inside for the purpose of releasing, integrating and recognizing what truly nourishes us.

Good Journey,
Frank

In the realm of acupuncture, the most common energetic pathways used are the 12 meridians or regular channels.  These meridians connect to the yin and yang organ systems of the body.  This system is generally emphasized in Chinese medical schools, however there are other energy channels that are equally valuable, known as the 8 extraordinary vessels.

Sunday Qigong Classes Starting Again at White Crane Healing Arts

Connecting to the lower dan tien (Field of Elixir)

Frank Iborra*“The forces of Autumn create dryness in Heaven and metal on earth; they create the lung organ and the skin upon the body. . . And the nose, the white color, and pungent flavor. . . The emotion of grief, and the ability to make a weeping sound.”

Inner Classics (400 BCE – 260 CE) *

Fall is the season of harvest, a time to sink inward, to gather and store as the deep stillness approaches. A time to let go of all our attachments; like the leaves falling gently to the earth. In ancient China, the concept of time was understood differently than in this present day. Today, we view things in accordance to small linear fragments of time, such as seconds, minutes, hours, days etc. We’ve lost the sensitivity to relate to the whole. Ancients related to the rhythms and cycles of stars, planets, the sun and moon. Their observations revealed the interdependence between humans and the cosmos.

You can observe this interdependence as well. For example, last month the sun crossed the celestial equator; the imaginary line in the sky above the earth’s equator, from north to south. This is a sign that yin is increasing and yang is decreasing. I know that what happens in the heavens, also happens within, so I make adjustments in my daily activities to sync with the flow of this seasonal change. Also, I’m writing this between the hours of 1:00-3:00 pm. My training as an oriental doctor, taught me that this time corresponds to the flow of qi and blood within the small intestine channel and organ system. The meaning here is that this is an ideal time to address imbalances within this organ system. You can learn to ride the flow of energies that surround and influence us to deepen your life experience.

In Taoist tradition, there is a strong emphasis in living life in harmony and balance. The relationship of the primal forces known as yin and yang can be arranged to reflect the balance in each situation and context. Equilibrium and balance does not mean 50/50; rather it requires an awareness and skill to find the balance in each moment. This awareness can be skillfully developed. Increasing awareness in the Taoist tradition begins by cultivating our energies on a daily basis. Using practices such as Longevity breathing, clear intention and connecting our feeling awareness deep within our bodies is a process that has many steps and levels of understanding.

One such step is the development of a clear path and connection to the lower dan tien, also known as the field of elixir. The lower dan tien relates to the first to the third chakras in the Hindu system and is located 1/3 the distance between the naval and top of the pubic bone. This energy vortex controls all things related to physical capacity. “According to research conducted by Dr. Michael Gerson, a professor of anatomy and cell biology of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, the lower dan tien sends and receives impulses, records experiences, and responds to emotions. Its nerve cells are bathed in, and influenced by the same neurotransmitters as the brain. The lower dan tien’s “brain”, known as the enteric (intestinal) nervous system is a network of 100 million neurons, neurotransmitters (more than the spinal cord contains) and proteins that act independently of the body’s brain and can send messages, learn, remember and produce feelings.” Dr. Gerson’s research results provide scientific verification of what Eastern wisdom has taught for millenia, verifying that centers of consciousness exist in the body besides the brain; and that the abdomen is one of the body’s major centers of awareness.

It is through this awakening and reconnecting to this primal field of energy that we regain our lost inheritance to our deepest selves and the realization that we are the children of the universe. Feeling our way into reality has nothing to do with philosophy or belief. It is simply coming back to basics. Accessing and stabilizing awareness in the lower dan tien creates the ability to establish a foundation of whole health, which can then expand to other aspects of our being. This is also how we can experience the subtle resonance of celestial bodies dancing thru the universe, weaving their universal rhythms and patterns into being to reawaken us to the interconnectedness of everything.

Starting in November, Sunday Qigong classes will be exploring the “kinetic communication” of the lower dan tien. We will be using and refining many of the practices you have learned in previous classes, or if new, I will be teaching basic techniques so that you will have the material to move forward. The Taoist longevity breathing will be important and also taught in combination with the dissolving process. The dissolving practice’s potential sinking qualities will be included and refined for the more experienced students. Standing and sitting practices, cloud hands and Taoist yoga will be explored as part of this process.

Class Schedule for November & December, 2014

Sunday, Nov. 16th.

Sunday, Nov. 23rd.

Sunday, Dec. 7th.

Sunday, Dec. 14th.

Sunday, Dec. 21st.

Sunday class times 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Cost: $25.00 individuals per class $40.00 couples per class

Beginners and practitioners of other traditions welcome.

Note to NSEV Practitioners: This process of feeling our way into the lower dan tien is a kinetic way to experience the primal oceans. Each layer of releasing brings one into the origin of our body, the chong. This process is one of the ways to merge yourself back into your true self.

Medical Qigong for the Heart

New Medical Qigong Certification Classes by Lisa Vanostrand Part I – By Lisa VanOstrand, DMQ

Editor’s Note: This is part 1 of a 3 part series that will focus on how medical qi gong can benefit the physical, mental-emotional and spiritual aspects of the heart.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. Coronary heart disease, in just the United States alone, costs close to 109 billion dollars a year.

The earliest qi gong came from the Chinese observing the movement of animals. By imitating the movement of a bird flapping its wings, we can bring enormous health benefits to the heart. All Medical qi gong has three aspects: posture, breath and intentionality.
